Dancers are welcome to enrol in just a jazz class, but a ballet class is highly recommended to compliment jazz and will help further develop practical knowledge, coordination, flexibility and strength.
Jazz is an incredibly popular dance style that emerged towards the end of the 20th century when African American dancers began to blend African movement with European styles of movement (like ballet!)
Jazz, as we know it today, pulls inspiration from trends in music, culture, film and more. There are staple steps and movements in jazz just like ballet, but they can be adapted to fit many styles of music and vibe – such as pop, rock, disco, funk, basically anything upbeat!
At LCDC, we integrate Comdance Modern Jazz syllabus in our jazz classes to provide the opportunity for dancers to learn and practice the foundation steps, as well as free exercises, corner work and a dance.
For our youngest jazz dancers, we offer ‘Jazz Foundations’. This is a class combined of students in Pre-Primary and Primary level (Kindergarten and Year 1 at school). While this class is combined, our fantastic teacher Miss Bree is able to adapt the class and exercises to welcome new dancers and to further develop students technique.
At Grade 1 & 2 Jazz levels LCDC introduces the Comdance Modern Jazz syllabus to dancers to build up their jazz technique and repertoire. Grade 1 & 2 Jazz classes are their own individual class, working on a different level of syllabus appropriate to students age and abilities.
Jazz exams become available from Grade 1 for students who have grasped the concept of jazz and show an understanding of the style and music.
Often Grade 1 & 2 Jazz classes combine for the end of year concert dance, as jazz pieces are especially fun with more dancers!
*Please note that these are guidelines only. Teachers will assess students and recommend the appropriate grade class for them on an individual basis, taking into account their maturity, ability to develop the work etc.
As a Comdance registered school, LCDC is proud to be able to offer examinations for Jazz.
While Comdance does have two levels of Jazz Foundations exams, from 2022 onwards LCDC will not be doing examinations for Jazz Foundations students as we want to give young students the freedom of an especially fun, low-pressure class.
Examinations become available for students in Grade 1 Jazz onwards. Teachers and the admin team at LCDC will take the time to communicate with you about where your dancer is at this time.
An annual enrolment fee of $35 applies to all students. A 10% discount applies to families with multiple students. Costumes, special events and exam classes are payable separately. If vacancies allow, students are welcome to enrol mid-term and pro-rated from week 3 onwards.

Unfortunately, we only offer one jazz class per level each week.
Yep! The social aspect of dance at this age is incredibly important and we like to keep the grades together throughout the years as much as possible.
